Wood In All Its Forms

There Is More Than One Way
To Bring Wood Into A Design.

The warmth and character of wood can be introduced in many different ways.

Sometimes the right choice is premium solid timber. In other situations, natural veneer or a carefully selected timber-look surface can achieve the appearance, practicality and budget the project requires.

Sussexhurst Woodworks helps you choose the right material, not simply the most expensive one.

01

Solid Timber

Natural solid wood for premium benchtops, doors, shelving, mouldings, trims and bespoke components where the character and feel of real timber matters most.

02

Natural Veneer

A genuine timber surface that brings real grain, warmth and variation into cabinetry, doors and panels where solid timber construction may not be necessary.

03

Timber-Look Surfaces

Contemporary decorative finishes including premium timber-look products and selected woodgrain melamines for consistent, practical and more accessible applications.

The goal isn't to use more wood. It's to use the right wood look in the right place.

Premium Solid Timber

When Only Real Wood
Will Do.

Solid timber brings something to a project that no imitation can completely reproduce.

Natural grain, variation, texture and warmth give each piece its own character, making solid wood ideal for applications where the material itself should become part of the design.

Sussexhurst can help with specification, design and quotation, with specialist manufacture available from established New Zealand timber craftsmen.

01

Timber Benchtops

Solid timber benchtops, islands, breakfast bars and feature surfaces designed around the dimensions, species and finish required for the project.

02

Doors & Drawer Fronts

Solid timber cabinetry fronts for kitchens, furniture and feature applications where natural grain and craftsmanship are central to the finished result.

03

Shelving & Feature Pieces

Floating shelves, feature ledges, breakfast bars and other exposed timber details that introduce warmth without requiring an entire room to be timber.

04

Mouldings & Trims

Decorative and functional timber mouldings, trims, rails and profiles manufactured to suit cabinetry, interiors and bespoke joinery requirements.

05

Panels & Architectural Details

Feature panels, end panels and other timber elements designed to add depth, character and continuity to kitchen and interior schemes.

06

Bespoke Components

One-off pieces produced from drawings, dimensions or project requirements where a standard off-the-shelf product simply isn't the right answer.

Designed Around The Project

Have Something Different In Mind?

Sussexhurst has extensive experience working from drawings, dimensions and design concepts to develop timber components for individual projects.

Send us your drawings, plans, dimensions or idea. We can help develop the requirement, prepare a quotation and coordinate specialist manufacture.

Solid timber isn't simply a finish. It's a material that can become part of the character of the project.

Wood-Look Surfaces

The Character Of Wood.
More Than One Way To Achieve It.

Solid timber isn't always the only — or the most appropriate — way to introduce wood into a project.

Natural veneer and contemporary timber-look surfaces can create warmth, grain and visual character while offering different levels of consistency, practicality and cost.

Sussexhurst Woodworks can help you choose where genuine timber matters most and where another surface may provide the smarter solution.

01

Natural Timber Veneer

Veneer uses a genuine layer of natural timber over a stable substrate, bringing the grain, variation and character of real wood into cabinetry and interior surfaces.

It can be an excellent choice where the appearance of natural timber is important but solid construction isn't required.

02

Timber-Look Decorative Surfaces

Premium timber-look products, including options such as Sage Timbalook and selected woodgrain melamines, provide another way to introduce the appearance of wood.

Their consistency, durability and broad range of finishes can make them particularly effective for complete cabinetry schemes and budget-conscious projects.

Mix The Materials

You Don't Have To Choose Just One.

Some of the most effective interiors combine materials: timber-look cabinetry with a solid timber breakfast bar, painted cabinetry with natural veneer feature panels, or stone surfaces complemented by real timber shelving.

It's not about making everything timber. It's about knowing where wood will make the greatest difference.

Built To Last

Not All Timber Benchtops
Are Created Equal.

Two quotations can describe what appears to be the same solid timber benchtop — yet the finished products can be very different.

Timber selection, seasoning, construction, finishing and manufacturing experience all influence how a benchtop performs once it becomes part of a working kitchen.

The real value isn't simply how the timber looks on installation day. It's how it performs in the years that follow.

01

Timber Selection & Seasoning

Quality begins before manufacture. Carefully selected, properly seasoned timber helps reduce the risk of movement, bowing and splitting after installation.

02

Genuine Solid Wood

A true solid timber benchtop is fundamentally different from a timber veneer over a manufactured core. The material runs through the product rather than simply covering it.

03

Construction Matters

Board selection, lamination and manufacturing technique influence dimensional stability and the long-term performance of the completed benchtop.

04

The Finish Is Critical

Kitchens expose timber to moisture, heat, cleaning and everyday wear. The quality and suitability of the finish therefore plays a major role in protecting the surface.

05

Experience Behind The Product

Specialist timber knowledge matters. Experienced craftspeople can identify unsuitable material and potential problems long before they become part of the finished product.

06

Protection Beyond Manufacture

Careful finishing, packaging, delivery and appropriate installation all contribute to ensuring a quality timber product reaches the project as it was intended.

The Solid Timber Advantage

Made To Age.
And Made To Be Renewed.

One of the great advantages of genuine solid timber is that the surface isn't merely decorative.

Scratches, staining and years of everyday wear do not necessarily mean the end of the benchtop. Depending on its condition, a solid timber surface can often be sanded, refinished and given a new lease of life.

That's a very different proposition from a thin decorative surface or veneer that may require replacement once the surface itself has been significantly damaged.

Comparing Quotations

Don't Compare The Bottom Line Alone.

If two timber benchtop quotations differ significantly, compare what is actually being supplied: the timber, construction, finish, manufacturing expertise, warranty and how the finished product will reach your project. A lower initial price doesn't necessarily represent better long-term value.

A timber benchtop is something you'll see and touch every day. It deserves to be chosen for more than its price.

Behind Sussexhurst Woodworks

Good Design Needs
Good Manufacturing.

Sussexhurst Woodworks combines practical design and specification experience with specialist New Zealand solid-timber manufacturing.

Since 2021, Sussexhurst has developed an established working relationship with The Woodsmiths, including bespoke products manufactured from Sussexhurst designs and drawings.

That relationship allows us to concentrate on understanding the project, developing the solution and looking after the customer while specialist timber craftspeople take care of manufacture and finishing.

Sussexhurst Woodworks

Design. Specify. Coordinate.

Sussexhurst works with the homeowner, kitchen company, cabinetmaker, designer or builder to understand the requirement, develop the details and prepare the project for manufacture.

Specialist Manufacture

Crafted By The Woodsmiths.

The Woodsmiths specialise in solid timber manufacture, bringing more than three decades of experience in timber selection, lamination, finishing and specialist wood production to the finished product.

01

Solid Wood Specialists

Products are manufactured from genuine solid timber where solid timber is specified — not simply a thin decorative veneer over a manufactured core.

02

30+ Years Experience

The Woodsmiths team brings more than three decades of specialist solid-wood manufacturing knowledge to timber selection, construction and finishing.

03

Protected For Real Kitchens

Specialist finishing systems are available for high-wear kitchen applications where moisture, cleaning and everyday use place greater demands on the timber surface.

04

Nationwide Capability

Finished timber products can be carefully packaged and supplied throughout New Zealand, supporting both residential and trade projects nationwide.

Finishing & Warranty

The Finish Matters As Much As The Timber.

A kitchen benchtop faces moisture, heat, cleaning products and constant everyday use, so the protective finish is a critical part of the product.

The Woodsmiths' specialist finishing systems include their established high-build resin finish, developed for demanding timber applications.

Depending on the finish selected, Woodsmiths products can carry a 5 or 10 year warranty covering faulty workmanship and materials.

Sussexhurst brings the project knowledge. The Woodsmiths bring the specialist craftsmanship. Together, the focus is on getting the product right.

The Sussexhurst Story

Woodwork Isn't New
To Sussexhurst.

Sussexhurst Woodworks isn't a new direction built around a product trend.

The Sussexhurst story began with cabinetmaking, joinery and carpentry — long before the business became focused on kitchen design, renovation and consultancy.

Wood has been part of Sussexhurst from the beginning.

From Joinery
To Kitchens.

The Sussexhurst journey began after completing a four-year cabinetmaking and joinery apprenticeship, followed by practical building experience that showed how the products made in the workshop became part of the finished home.

Sussexhurst Carpentry & Joinery was later established and grew into a substantial contracting business, carrying out both labour-only site contracts and individual residential work.

Decades of experience across carpentry, joinery, cabinetry, construction and kitchen renovation now come together in Sussexhurst Woodworks.

01

Cabinetmaking & Joinery

A traditional apprenticeship provided the foundation in timber, joinery construction and workshop craftsmanship.

02

Carpentry & Construction

Site experience added an understanding of how designed and manufactured timber products actually perform within completed buildings.

03

Kitchen Experience

Years of kitchen design, cabinetry and renovation work bring practical understanding of how materials, products and finishes work together.

04

Modern Specialist Manufacture

Today that experience is supported by specialist New Zealand manufacturing relationships capable of producing quality timber products from Sussexhurst specifications and designs.

Sussexhurst has changed considerably over the years. The connection to wood never really left.
